Orvieto- you have captured my heart.. commanded my attention and will call to me for another visit!
This day begins in the morning at the Termini Station where we catch the train and ride for over an hour to a small hill town called Orvieto. We passed some beautiful countryside on the way and I attempted to take pictures but between the glass and speed of the train, I wasnt very successful.
When you arrive in Orvieto, the way to get up to the town is to take a funicolare... this cost 1.80 Euro each. Its a small trainlike machine that slowly climbs the Cliffside.
Once you reach the top and are on the main street of Orvieto... you can walk to your left and enter a fortress that was commissioned by a Pope and climb to the walls to get great views of the newer town below and outlying farms. This day is very cold and windy so the pictures don't do this place justice... just breathtaking the view from up here! There is also a monastery below where on a clear day, you can hear the monks chanting or singing.
Back at the entrance if you head to the right... you can see St Patricks well, one of the things I was excited to see and get pictures of but was closed.... continue to the right and you will see old Etruscan Ruins, a temple and out buildings and another incredible area with a great view to take more pictures.
There is a piazza in the center of Orvieto where one the first Gothic Churches is. Fascinating to see the layered marble to make black and white stripes. Felt quite large in comparison to the buildings around it. There are fantastic places to eat in this area as well, we enjoyed eating lunch at one of them. You must sample local wine with your meal and try wild boar, which is popular to this area.
This town was just exactly what I had always imagined about small town Italy. Older men and women heading to market, sipping caffe, lots of shorter, smaller buildings. We didn't even realize how busy and noisy Rome was until we left and came to this town.. so peaceful, and refreshing.
Everyone should visit this adorable town! I could write all day about the things I loved here but nothing I could say or pictures I could share would do it justice.. Absolutely stole my heart, this sweet town. You can easily walk the whole thing in a day... LOVED IT!
